Special Ed Transportation Committee Meeting

Meeting called to order at 11:30 am

Introductions and Hot topics

• Kelly- reminded everyone about Non Public student transportation and to be careful about what is written in IEP and justification why on the sped bus.
• Renee- had question regarding Homeless and living out of District, what if no one is home. Depends on your district plan.
• Theresa said her district homeless is at 265% increase, they have 250 students getting special transportation who are homeless.
• Niki- concerns with how much abuse driver and ea have to take from a sped student? The problem still has not been resolved. – Contact district sped department to help with problem; they should help resolve the problem.
• Viva question regarding 504 for student that can’t walk to school and this is there only accommodation. Kelly person at department for 504 contact Adalay Searcy
• Eric has a wheelchair student at apartment building that does not have a ramp, where do his responsibility’s start and end? It is up to the parent to get them in and out of the building.

Video review:

We will be reviewing videos and making recommendations to add or remove from the suggested list. Rating system 1 to 5, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.

• We reviewed “Transporting the Emotional Disabled” a AMS video- this video needs to be taken off the list- it is out dated, this was given a grade of 1.
• We reviewed “Intervention Strategies for Special Ed Bus Drivers” a Coastal video- this was given a grade of 3, suitable for regular or sped drivers. Good review video for behavior management, might be price prohibited, does require driver trainer guidance.
• Add “I am Tyler” Video

Carolyn has several video’s that are not on the list that she will bring for us to review and possible add to the list.

Due to the late start we were not able to start to review Unit VI Special Needs Transportation from the Model Training Manual.

Home work—Yes home work for next meeting—review Unit VI from the Model Training Manual as well as the three quizzes. We spend time at the next meeting as a group to go thru. This is the curriculum that will be used in the Manual as well as at Train the Trainer summer 2011.  Click here to view Unit VI.
