Special Education Transportation Committee meeting

October 19th, 2011 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

Welcome back

Everyone was welcomed back and Kala gave an update on what she is working on for monthly meetings.          

 

        Kala asked Leann and Brent is working on getting someone from WC Company to come and speak to group.

        Kala is working on a speaker to present on Care and Treatment.

        Carolyn Oakes will have a speaker to talk about Pre-school children when at her site in December

        Kala is working on finding someone to present from Mn Academy Faribault

        Teresa will have their District Attorney in to speak about confidential data in January when we are at Osseo.

        Sensory training in April when Anoka, Kala will demonstrate the program she uses with her staff.

        We will review and possibly revamp the Nominee form for Sped driver and assistant of the year.

        We will review the MDE Transporting students with Special Needs Q&A.

        Speaker from MDE  regarding Restrict Procedures and the use of procedures governed by Mn Statues, Sections 125A.0941 and 125A.0942 in which changes are being made.

 

Introductions of all attendees and “Hot Topics”-

Question for group was asked if anyone has had experience with Autistic child that will not stay in Harness system. Is able reach connects and unsnap the system.  It was suggest that in Bloomington they had a similar situation and they took a T-shirts and fit it over the Harness and the child was no longer able to get at the buckles. 

Question was asked what to do with an Autistic child that is banging head against window. They have tried padding, moving student, but they continue to bang head. It was suggested to check with the Autism specialist with the District they contract with and ask them to ride with to see if there is something that is agitating the child. It has been experience from other that they can sometimes pin point what might be causing these types of behaviors.

 

Kala informed the group that she has been working with Q’Straint since TTT on getting a training platform for Minnesota. Q’Straint did send Kala a platform and all training materials that can be used by anyone that attends TTT wheelchair securement certification. Kala reported that Kelly Stano used it in August for her training. Kelly shared with the group her positive experience with using the platform. If you are interested in using the platform and materials and have your certification from TTT from July 2011 contact Kala.

 

Kala is working on getting Cheryl Wolf to TTT in 2012 to do 8 hour Child safety system certification in school buses. Class size will b limited.

 

TTT 2012 if anyone has suggestions, recommendations of session they would like to see at TTT please contact Kala.

 

MSBOA and MAPT joint conference committee are working on getting Peggy Burns as a presenter at our joint winter conference.

Two vendors donate training bus seats that districts or contractors can borrow for training session. CE white donated a seat that has two built seats, and Telin Transportation donated two seats that have lap shoulder belts. If you are interested in borrowing any of these seats please contact Kala.

 

Kala presenting at the Special Education Conference at Craguns the end of October. She is presenting with Cara Grisim from MSBOA. The presentation is similar to the one from the presentation Kala and Kelly Wosika did at MDE in September. It is called “Bridging the Gap between Transportation and Special Education Department.

 

Update on National Conference- Dates is March 9th thru 11th, 2012 in Orlando check out website at www.eduprogroup.com deadline for early bird registration is fast approaching.

 

Evacuation Drill

Sue and Jenny from Anderson Bus reviewed with the group some of the training they do with their drivers, which included evacuation drills. The group slit into two groups and boarded two different buses. Each person attending the meeting was able to participate in hands on evacuation drill. After we were done the group did a little Q&A. This experience was well received and the group decided this would be a session they would like to see at Train the Trainer in 2012.

South Washington County Schools Jeff Jorgenson. Jeff has a presentation regarding Care and Treatment and who is responsible for Transportation.
